Provide assistance ( including but not limited to fellowship, food, shelter, Florida Round Up, Lambda North, Lambda South, Lambda Miami, Inspire Recovery, transitional housing and medicines.) for LGBTQ+ people in recovery in South Florida, who are in need of a little assistance in getting their life on track in sobriety. South Florida remains a recovery destination, drawing LGBTQ+ people looking for recovery from all over the United States, so we serve on a National basis.
Brock Richard Haney, a Middletown, NY native, died unexpectedly on February 4, 2016 in West Palm Beach, FL. He was 25. The son of Michael and Kym Haney, he was born on October 16, 1990 in Lowville, NY. Brock was working for LA Fitness in Lake Worth. Brock is survived by his loving parents, Michael and Kym, his sister Brittany, his brother Barrett and his loving nieces.
Brock attended Goshen Christian School in Goshen, NY, and Chapel Field Christian High School in Pine Bush, NY. He graduated from the Minisink Valley High School in 2009. In pursuit of his dream to become a pilot, he attended Everglades University in Sarasota, FL. While a student, Brock explored many interests, including track and field, and cross country running, drama and music. Gifted with a sweet and talented voice, he sang in a variety of school programs, as well as coffee houses and churches. He even auditioned for American Idol. Brock enjoyed snowmobiling and yearly canoe trips in the Adirondacks in upstate New York. This was time he enjoyed with his family!
His love for God and God’s people led him on several short term mission trips with Touch the World. He served the Lord as a missionary in Bolivia, South America, and in Uganda, Africa. In South Florida he was known as a loving and outgoing man committed to recovery, committed to his LGBTQ+ community, and committed to helping those who struggled with their sexuality and addiction. Brock made a difference! The details and statistics included here can hardly describe Brock Haney appropriately. Brock was loved by many people.
He put other people before himself. It required no effort on his part to think of others first. He lit up a room he entered, just by walking into it. His smile was contagious. Brock would routinely say “love you more!” when talking to his family and friends. He was not one to say “goodbye”, but rather, “see you later”.
To capture the essence of Brock’s generosity and commitment to recovery specifically in the South Florida LGBTQ+ community The From Brock Haney With Love Fund was established in 2016 by Kevin Owens, his sponsor for many years. In 2020, the From Brock Haney With Love Fund, Inc. was officially registered as a nonprofit. From Brock Haney With Love Fund, Inc. has attained a Gold Star for transparency in Guidestar, which is a collection of nonprofit organizations and their organizational information. During the four years in existence the From Brock Haney With Love Inc. has provided over $20,000 to hundreds of LGBTQ+ people in recovery. From a little help for shelter, food, clothes or medicine to fellowship and sober networking events like the Florida Round Up. The From Brock Haney With Love Fund is one of the very few organizations nationally that actively and exclusively supports LGBTQ+ people in recovery. In 2020 the From Brock Haney With Love Inc. became an official nonprofit. Employer Identification Number: 85-0537175. All donations are tax deductible. In addition, with the blessing of the Haney Family we expanded our services from West Palm Beach to include all of South Florida with emphasis on Lambda North, Lambda South, Lambda Miami and the Florida Round Up.
The From Brock Haney With Love Inc. is a beacon of hope for the LGBTQ+ community that to this day still fights for equal rights and the dignity and respect they deserve has human beings.
The From Brock Haney With Love Inc. is on the front line of recovery. It is not always pretty. Homelessness, suicide and death are common. Young LGBTQ+ people evicted from their homes because of their sexuality, are homeless, turn to a life on the streets of prostitution and addiction.
We are there to help in the spirit of Brock. This is a front line organization where your support makes an immediate impact and truly can save a life. There is enough hate in the world. This is a chance to truly make a difference. Change starts one donation at a time.
WE BELIEVE IN CHANGE
To provide a physically safe properly maintained, mentally and spiritually healthy environment for those in the recovery process, and to offer support and growth opportunities for a better quality of life for the LGBTQ community, their families, and the communities in which they serve.
Learning to live sober is a lifelong commitment. For many in the LGBTQ recovery community drugs and alcohol became part of a vicious life style. Being able to live, work, and socialize within our community, and as importantly in the community at large, is a critical component for success. Lambda North, Lambda South and Lambda Miami-Dade offers many opportunities for service work and social sober activities. Getting a strong and comfortable foundation is something Lambda North, Lambda South and Lambda Miami-Dade provides. It can be scary and lonesome in recovery as a LGBTQ person. Our organizations help reinforce that we are not alone and we are not unique.

I am grateful for my friendship with the Haney Family. I am also grateful for the friendship and opportunity to sponsor Brock for almost four years. He truly was a special person in my life. His sudden loss was heartbreaking and devastating to many in our LGBTQ+ community. He was not the first loss, and many have been lost since. The recovery world in the LGBTQ+ community is full of wonderful stories of success, but on the other side of the coin are heartbreaking stories of struggle, shame, inequality, abuse, loneliness and death. This is what the From Brock Haney With Love Inc. does. We give hope in our community to those who think they are hopeless. We reach out to those who have little or think no one cares. We give dignity to those who feel they are not lovable.
As members of LGBTQ+ we are a minority. Within the LGBTQ+ community the numbers in active recovery or seeking recovery is a relatively small percentage. From the start we are working with a small group of individuals who are spiritually, physically and financially depleted. Securing funds without creating donor fatigue is a real challenge. The great fact is we depend on the compassion and generosity of people, businesses and foundations to help us help others.
Why is there a need for a LGBTQ+ recovery assistance?
Alcohol and drug addiction is a baffling and insidious disease. It takes much more than will power alone to stay sober. To understand alcohol and drug addiction one must first realize that drugs and alcohol are only a symptom. Many issues need to be addressed. More often than not in the LGBTQ+ community sexuality is an issue including but not limited to shame, guilt remorse and denial. Being able to share these issues in an understanding and accepting environment is paramount.

It can be scary and lonesome in recovery as a LGBTQ+ person. The From Brock Haney With Love Inc. reinforces that we are not alone and we are not unique. We are on the front line. It is not always pretty. People die. People relapse. The stories of hate and discrimination break your heart. But we work even harder. This is a chance to give to people that need it the most. This is a chance to break the cycle of hate; a chance to potentially save a life.
Bobby, Jim and I are committed to this mission and are committed to doing this in the name of Brock Haney. Will you join us and make a donation? Any amount great or small will have IMPACT.
